MESA, Ariz. – Kansas junior Thanuttra “Fhong” Boonraksasat shot a 2-under 70 in her final round to lead the KU women’s golf team at the Second Annual Clover Cup at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz., Sunday.

As a team Kansas improved one spot from Saturday’s 36 holes to finish 11th with a three-round 917 (+53). The Jayhawks, who shot a 312 (+24) and 301 (+13) Saturday, shot a 304 (+16) in Sunday’s final round and were four shots from 10th-place Colorado (913). Fifth-ranked Oklahoma cruised to the team title with a three-round 862 (-2), outdistancing runner-up SMU which had an 880 (+16), in the 16-team field.

“We came back after that first round and played steady, which is good,” Kansas head coach Erin O’Neil said. “We just have to put three solid rounds together and we’ll be in good shape.”

Boonraksasat, who had five birdies on Sunday, ended the three-round event as Kansas’ highest finisher with a 54-hole 223 (+7) good for a tie for 19th place in the 94-golfer field. Tulsa’s Kristina Merkle shot a 6-under 66 on Sunday to take the individual title with a 210 (-6). She edged Oklahoma’s Chriapat Jao-Javanil by two strokes (214).

“Fhong did a good job of coming back and shooting a 2-under today,” O’Neil said. “This was her best tournament of the spring so far.”

Kansas freshman Yupaporn Kawinpakorn finished tied for 38th with a 229 (+13), which included a 79 on Sunday. Junior Meghan Potee tied for 59th with a 234 (+18), while senior teammate Audrey Yowell, who played as an individual at the Clover Cup, was one stroke behind Potee with a 235 (+19) finishing tied for 64th. Sophomore Gabby DiMarco shot a 2-over 74 Sunday and tied for 68th with a 237 (+21), while sophomore Minami Levonowich placed 76th with a 239 (+23) to round out the KU scoring.

“Big numbers got us today and yesterday morning,” O’Neil said. “The greens were tricky and if you got on the wrong side of them it would be easy to three putt. You also had the desert involved and if you didn’t hit a fairway you could end up against a bush and would have to take an unplayable (lie). Those are what caused the higher scores.”

Kansas will be back in action March 25-26 at the Briar’s Creek Invitational in Johns Island, S.C.
