Kansas Beats Nebraska, Advances to Big 12 Championship Game

DALLAS, Texas –

The <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Kansas men’s basketball team defeated Nebraska, 79-65, in the semifinals of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Jayhawks to 24-7 on the season and moves them into Sunday’s title game against Texas.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Nebraska stayed with KU until the midway point of the first half when a 3-pointer from freshman Brandon Rush ignited a 13-2 run to put the Jayhawks up for the remainder of the game. The Jayhawks connected on four 3-point field goals during the run and led 38-26 at the break.

The Jayhawks, who were just 1-of-9 from behind the arc on Friday against Oklahoma State, saw many more of their shots fall from the 3-point line on Saturday versus the Huskers. KU ended the game going 7-of-19 from downtown.

Kansas was led by freshman Mario Chalmers and his 18 points, seven assists and six rebounds on the afternoon. Sophomore Russell Robinson’s chipped in with 13 points and eight assists. Led by Darnell Jackson’s 10 boards off the bench, KU out-rebounded Nebraska by a 38-30 margin.

Tip-off for Sunday’s championship game is slated for 2:00 p.m. and can be seen live nationally on ESPN.
