Jayhawks Finish 10th at the Cajun Classic

Newcomer Brandon Hermreck shot his best round as a Jayhawk, firing a final-round 71 at the Cajun Classic at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, La. The team shot a final round 295, improving on their second round effort by 11 strokes to finish in 10th place.

“We definitely played a lot better today than we did in the afternoon yesterday,” said head coach Kit Grove. “We were a lot more competitive and Brandon played very well today.”

Hermreck finished the event with a three-round total of 227 to tie for 53rd place.

Freshman Brad Hopfinger was the top individual finisher for the Jayhawks, finishing tied for 17th place after a final-round 75. Hopfinger has finished in the top-30 in five of his first seven collegiate events.

Junior Walt Koelbel carded a final-round 76 to finish the event tied for 28th place. The finish marks his top finish of the spring season.

Freshman Nate Barbee fired his best round of the tournament with a final-round 73 and ended the tournament tied for 45th place. Junior Zach Pederson shot a 78 and tied for 53rd place, while junior Daniel Brumley, who competed in the event as an individual, shot a final-round 84 and tied for 74th place.

Colorado took home the team trophy after firing a final-round 279 to finish the event two-under par with a three-round score of 862. Kelly Kraft of SMU won medalist honors after carding a final round 70.

The Jayhawks will next be in action when they travel to Goodyear, Ariz., to compete in the Ron Moore Invitational March 21-23.
