March 11, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

After suffering two tough losses to ranked opponents last weekend, the Kansas women’s tennis team opens Big 12 action when it travels to Lincoln, Neb. to take on the No. 56 Cornhuskers at Nebraska Tennis Center on Friday. Match time is set for 3 p.m.

Following Friday’s dual with Nebraska, the Jayhawks will move on to face Iowa State in Ames, Iowa on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Nebraska (9-0) boasts the No. 119-ranked Mary Weatherholt, a freshman whom three Jayhawks played, but never defeated, during fall action. Weatherholt will play at the No. 2 position and most likely face KU’s Ekaterina Morozova. Morozova currently owns a 1-1 record against ranked players after defeating BYU’s Kristina Doerr last Friday in straight sets.

Iowa State, coming off a 6-1 win over UMKC, is 7-3 on the season and led by sophomore Liza Wischer. Wischer is undefeated in singles play (7-0) at the No. 4 spot while Kansas senior Yuliana Svistun is 6-4 at the same spot. Iowa State will host Kansas State at 1 p.m. on Friday before welcoming the Jayhawks on Saturday.

After opening Big 12 play on the road, Kansas will return home for the weekend of March 20-22 to play host to Colorado on Friday at 2 p.m. and Missouri at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
