For the second time in the last three games, freshman Kendra Cullum came up with the game-winning RBI as the first baseman’s bunt in the bottom of the sixth inning scored sophomore Maggie Hull to give the University of Kansas softball team a 3-2 edge over Mount St. Mary’s Friday in the opening game of the North Florida Tournament.

KU improved to 18-3 with the come-from-behind victory, while the Mount evened their record to 4-4.

Kansas did all of its scoring in the sixth frame collecting three runs off four hits and taking advantage of two errors by the Mount. Junior Liz Kocon and sophomore Mariah Montgomery led off the frame with a single and double, respectively. During Montgomery’s hit, freshman Elsa Moyer, who was pinch running for Kocon, advanced all the way to third base. After rounding third, Moyer found that the throw home from right field bounced back towards the back stop. As the catcher went to get the ball home plate was left wide open for Moyer to score.

After a single from Maggie Hull moved Malazzo, running for Montgomery, to third, Malazzo scored on Rosie Hull’s Bunt. Maggie then stole third and scored the go-ahead run when Cullum’s bunt was bobbled by Mount St. Mary’s third baseman. The Mount committed seven errors during the contest.

Senior pitcher Allie Clark entered for starter Kristin Martinez and shut down the Mount over the final four innings retiring 12 of the final 13 batters as she improved to 7-1 and tallied four strikeouts.

Mount St. Mary’s scored its two runs on a two-out home run in the top of the third inning. The Mount’s Nicole Pagano limited KU to just two hits through the first five innings before the Jayhawks broke open the game in the sixth.

Kansas will play again Saturday morning when it takes on Alabama State at 9 a.m. followed by Delaware State at 11:30 a.m. Central.
