Kansas Sweeps Creighton on Final Day at OU Invite

OKLAHOMA CITY – On the final day of racing at the Oklahoma Invite, the University of Kansas rowing team heads back to Lawrence after sweeping Creighton in the final four races of the day for the Jayhawks.

To kick off the day Sunday, the second novice eight defeated Oklahoma with a time of 7:15.22. Laura Benz, Allie Griffin, Kaylee Sextro, Andrea Joyce, Brooke Thuston, Jenni Hartzler, Angie Flores, Erin Brogan and coxswain Sarah Lasini combined to beat the Sooners by 10 seconds.

The Jayhawks then beat Creighton in the novice eight, varsity four, second varsity eight and varsity eight. In the novice eight, the boat of Kate Lygrisse, Libby Phillips, Lexa Fowlkes, Lindsey Leonard, Claudijah Lever, Leah Roy, Julia Alvey, Meghan Cahill and coxswain Caitlin Flanagan defeated the Bluejays with a time of 7:49.02.

Carly Iverson, Kellyn Angell, Hannah Silverthorne, Hannah Singhal and coxswain Katy MacCormack defeated CU in the varsity four with a finishing time of 8:18.63, which was nearly 30 seconds ahead of CU.

In the second varsity eight race, Emma Umbarger, Molly Boehner, Cheyenne Verdoorn, Cara Murray, Elizabeth Scherer, Ashleigh Allam, Kathryn Schoonover, Eileen Gallagher and coxswain Caty Clements beat CU with a time of 7:22.0.

KU then ended the invitational with a win in the varsity eight (Paige Stephens, Danielle Adam, Amanda Lewis, Emily Starr, Caity Decker, Jessica Miller, Angela Mings, Katie Hayes and coxswain Abbey Lozenski) with a time of 7:14.51.

For the day, KU entered six races and came away with five wins, while the Jayhawks came away with 11 wins for the entire weekend. The University of Oklahoma won the invitational as the Sooners defeated SMU on Sunday afternoon.

Kansas returns to the water next weekend when the Jayhawks travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the Louisville Invite March 17-18.
