Jayhawk Divers Begin NCAA Zone Championships

March 11, 2013

HOUSTON, Texas – Kansas senior Christy Cash finished with a total score of 238.80 in the three-meter event to lead the Jayhawk divers on the first day of the NCAA Zone Diving Championships at the University of Houston’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Houston, Texas Monday afternoon.

Cash’s score of 238.80 eclipsed her previous best three-meter score (224.40) in the Zone Championships was good enough for a 36th-place finish in her third career trip to the Zone Championship meet.

“They actually dove pretty well, but the competition was so stiff and the judging was so tight,” Kansas diving coach Eric Elliott said. “All three of them had one little miss and that was enough, because it was a pretty tight contest where everybody was diving pretty darn well. I think tomorrow in the one-meter we will do a little better than we did today.”

Freshman Meredith Brownell finished the event with a score of 223.30 for 41st-place and junior Alyssa Golden posted a score of 204.85 to finish 43rd, also besting her previous Zone Championship top score of 189.15.

The Jayhawk divers will be back in action tomorrow as they compete in the one-meter event on the second day of the NCAA Zone Diving Championships, with warm-ups beginning at 8 a.m. and the competition beginning at 10 a.m.
