Eastern Michigan scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back en route to an 8-1 triumph over Kansas at Hoglund Ballpark Saturday afternoon.

The Jayhawks snap a three-game winning streak and fall back to 7-7 overall, while the Eagles improve to 8-6 on the season.

Eastern Michigan scored early and often in the contest, tallying three runs on Kansas starting pitcher Wally Marciel in the top of the first. After Marciel retired the leadoff man, four-straight Eagles recorded base hits.

The senior lefty entered the contest having allowed just one run over his past two starts.

The Eagles strung four-straight hits together again in the fourth, however, this time two of them left the ballpark. The three-run fourth inning knocked the Kansas starting pitcher out of the game after 3 1/3 innings.

KU’s offense didn’t help matters. One day after recording a season-high 14 hits, the Jayhawks mustered just a single run on five hits. Sophomore Jake Marasco drove in the team’s only run of the game with a two-out RBI single in the eighth, after EMU had built an 8-0 lead.

The Jayhawks left nine men on base, including a pair in both the first and second innings.

Kansas will look to take the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday at Hoglund Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
