Nine different Jayhawks combined for a season-high-tying 18 hits as the University of Kansas softball team topped AlabamaState 16-2 in five innings in its first of two games Saturday during the UNF Tournament.

KU, which improved to 19-3 overall, will play again Saturday when it faces DelawareState at approximately 11:30 a.m. Central.

Senior Brittany Hile, junior Liz Kocon and freshman Kendra Cullum each recorded a home run in the contest. It marked Cullum’s first career round-tripper.

Hile and sophomores Alex Jones, Maggie Hull and Mariah Montgomery all had three hits each in the game, while junior Liz Kocon was the fifth Jayhawk to collect multiple hits with two. Hile, Kocon and Hull also drove in a team-high two runs apiece.

Jones pitched three full innings before giving up the only hit of the game, a double in the bottom of the fourth inning. AlabamaState also scored two runs during the frame, both unearned, off a pair of wild pitches. Jones tied a career best with eight strike outs and improved to 3-0 from the circle. Junior Ashley Spencer tossed the final inning, tallying two K’s.

KU scored at least one run in every inning, including five during the second inning as the Jayhawks sent 11 batters to the plate.
