March 13, 2006

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Fresh off his All-American performances in the shot put and weight throw over the weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships, senior Sheldon Battle was named the Division I Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year for the Midwest Region by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Coaches voted in the respective Division I, Division II and Division III categories. National winners will be announced next week.

The Jamestown, N.Y., native finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 63 feet, 4 inches and had a toss of 69-0 in the weight throw to put him in 10th place overall. Battle was the only student-athlete at the meet to compete in both throwing events. He has now earned indoor All-American status in both the shot put and weight throw in consecutive years.

With the indoor season complete, the University of Kansas men’s and women’s track and field teams will now focus on the outdoor portion of the schedule. The two teams open with the Tulsa Duels in Tulsa, Okla., on March 25.
