Jayhawk Tennis Captures First Big 12 Win, Defeats Iowa State, 5-2

March 14, 2009

AMES, Iowa –

For the 31st straight time, the Kansas women’s tennis team defeated Iowa State, 5-2, at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center Saturday afternoon. KU is now 34-1 all-time versus the Cyclones.

The win evened KU’s season record at 6-6 and 1-1 in the Big 12 while ISU fell to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

For the ninth time this season KU dropped the doubles point to its opponent as Horvath and Morozova were the only pairing to win a match. They defeated ISU’s Hickey and Karonis, 8-4. Kansas now owns a 3-6 record in matches in which it surrenders the doubles point.

The Jayhawks battled back in singles action, however, taking five of the six matches from the Cyclones to secure the 5-2 victory. Freshman Erin Wilbert bested Bolan Tarkoe in three sets to give her a team-best spring season record of 8-4 in singles play.

Coach Holt was pleased with the way the Jayhawks bounced back from Friday’s loss to No. 56 Nebraska.

“This was definitely a big win for us,” said Holt. “We had some good points from the Nebraska match, and the girls came out and competed hard today. They played their hearts out and I give them all the credit. Obviously our doubles play still needs some work, but our singles carried us through for the win.”

Kansas returns to its home court at First Serve Tennis Center when it hosts Colorado and Missouri, March 20 and March 22. Friday’s match with Colorado is set to begin at 2 p.m. while Sunday’s dual against Missouri is slated to start at 11 a.m.
