Jayhawk Track Gets KU on the Board for Capital One Cup

March 14, 2012

LAWRENCE, Kan. – After their second-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships last weekend the KU women’s track team helped Kansas Athletics move up the women’s leaderboard of the Capital One Cup. The runner-up finish gave the Jayhawks 12 points and puts them in 19th-place overall with 13 more NCAA Championship events to score in the winter and spring of 2012.

The Capital One Cup is scored by accounting for a program’s top 10 finishes in NCAA Championships and final official coaches’ polls throughout an academic year. The KU women’s program was not ranked last year but the men’s athletics program finished 29th in year one due to their strong finish in basketball.

This is the second year of the Capital One Cup, which awards annually to each of the best men’s and women’s Division I college athletics programs in the country. One winning men’s and one winning women’s program will be crowned after the completion of the final NCAA spring championships. Capital One will award a combined $400,000 in student-athlete scholarships and the Capital One Cup trophy to the winning schools at the ESPY awards in July.
