Richardson Named to Johnny Bench Award Watch List

LAWRENCE, Kan. – University of Kansas senior catcher Sean Richardson has been selected to the watch list for the Johnny Bench Award which is given yearly to the nation’s top collegiate catcher.
The list includes 37 catchers from 16 conferences who were selected by nominations from their coaches. The list will be cut down to 10 semi-finalists on May 17, 2005, before the field will be narrowed to three finalists on June 1. The 2005 Johnny Bench Award recipient will be announced at the 8th annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 29.
Richardson is the Jayhawks’ reigning Team MVP after he captured the honor following his first season with the team a year ago. In 2004, he batted .332 with 12 home runs and a team-leading 69 RBI, earning him second team All-Big 12 honors at season’s end. Currently, the Vista, Calif., native ranks fourth on the team with a .354 average, 15 RBI and two home runs. In addition, Richardson enters the Baker game tied for third in the Big 12 with eight doubles this season.
