AUSTIN, Texas –

Senior Ryne Price went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while junior Nick Czyz has a strong performance on the mound, but it was not enough. Texas second baseman Michael Torres drove in three runs as the 10th-ranked Longhorns knocked off Kansas, 6-1, in front of 6,101 fans Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The Longhorns improve to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 play, while the Jayhawks drop to 10-8 and 0-2.

Czyz pitched brilliantly through 5 1/3 innings, scattering five hits and allowing a pair of runs. The 6-foot-2 lefty walked one and struck out three, giving up his runs on an RBI double and a sacrifice fly in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.

KU took the early lead with Price led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a sharp single by Erik Morrison. Senior Joe Southers capped the rally with an RBI single to left field, driving in the Jayhawks’ only run of the game.

However, following three consecutive hits, the Longhorns’ pitching staff allowed just two more singles through the final seven innings.

Freshman Chance Ruffin pitched three innings of hitless relief to pick up his second victory of the season, while Stayton Thomas tossed 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen for his second save.

UT put the game out of reach on a two-run double by Torres in the seventh and back-to-back RBI hits by Jordan Danks and Preston Clark in the eighth.

The Jayhawks will look to salvage the final game of the series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
