Jayhawks Sweep Weekly Big 12 Awards

March 15, 2010

IRVING, Texas –

Kansas junior outfielder Casey Lytle and junior relief pitcher Brett Bochy have been named Big 12 Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 15. This marks the first time each student-athlete has been selected to the conference’s weekly awards list.

Lytle, a junior from Phoenix, Ariz., went 7-for-13 with six runs scored and four doubles in a three-game series at No. 1 LSU this weekend, and played stellar defense in right field, making a pair of highlight reel grabs. Lytle had 16 plate appearances in the series with the Tigers, and reached base 10 times (.625 on-base percentage), and scored six runs. Lytle also drove in four runs in the series as Kansas upset the nation’s top-ranked team.

Bochy, a redshirt junior from Poway, Calif., earned a pair of saves in KU’s series victory over No. 1-ranked LSU this past weekend. Bochy was called on to pitch 3 2/3 innings of relief, and he retired 11 of the 13 men he faced, including five via strikeout, allowing no runs and no hits. This season, Bochy has pitched 10 1/3 innings, and allowed one unearned run on two hits with four walks and 19 strikeouts.

KU hasn’t swept the Big 12 weekly awards since Feb. 14, 2006, when Gus Milner and Don Czyz were the conference’s player/pitcher of the week recipients.

Kansas (11-4) will play a two-game midweek series with Tulane in New Orleans, La., beginning Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. The game can be heard via internet broadcast at www.kuathletics.com.
