Kansas Travels to San Diego for Final Tune-Up Before Conference Play

In its last weekend before Big 12 Conference play, the Kansas softball team (11-12) travels to San Diego, Calif., this week, March 17-20, to participate in the San Diego Classic II. The Jayhawks are scheduled to play six games over the four day tournament.

Kansas will open the week with a single contest at Long Beach State (10-12) Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. CT. On Thursday, the Jayhawks will face Massachusetts (11-4) at 6:30 p.m. before taking on Harvard (4-5) and San Diego State (15-8) Friday at 1:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., respectively. The tournament concludes on Saturday with a game versus UIC (6-13) at 4 p.m., Kansas’ second meeting with the Flames this season, and a 6:30 p.m. contest with San Diego (5-12).

About Kansas

The Jayhawks played their first home games of the 2010 season last weekend after 19-straight contests on the road. Kansas finished 2-2 in the KU Invitational to bring a 11-12 overall mark to San Diego. Freshman Alex Jones leads the team with a .389 batting average and 28 hits. Senior Sara Ramirez has batted in a team-high 15 runs with the help of six home runs so far this year. The Jayhawks use three pitchers, led by junior Allie Clark’s 3.53 ERA.

Kansas will open its 2010 Big 12 Conference season next weekend, March 27-28, at Texas A&M with a two-game series. Friday’s game is scheduled for 1 p.m. and Saturday the teams will meet at noon. The Jayhawks then return home March 30 for a double header versus UMKC.
