Jayhawks in 14th After Day One at Betsy Rawls Invitational in Austin

AUSINT, Texas – Kansas sophomore Emily Powers finished in the top-15 to lead the Kansas women’s golf team during the first day of the Betsy Rawls Invitational at the University of Texas Golf Club (6,344 yards, par-72) in Austin, Texas, Monday. The Jayhawks finished tied for 14th place after completing 18 holes on day one with a score of 325.
“Today wasn’t our best, but considering the conditions I think we are in decent shape,” head coach Erin O’Neil said. “The girls hung in there today and kept fighting until the end. This is a course that the more times you play it, the better off you are. The plan is to take it one shot at a time the next two days and keep working hard.”
Powers is currently tied for 11th place after firing a five-over-par 77during the opening round, while freshman Grace Thiry completed the day with a first-round score of 80, good enough to tie in 33th place.
Senior Annie Giangrosso and sophomore Meghan Gockel each tied for 66th place after carding first-round scores of 84. Freshman Meghna Bal shot 87 to open the event and is currently tied in 80th place.
New Mexico set the pace for the 17-team field with a first round score of 303, while Ornella Jouven of Florida currently leads in the individual standings after completing the opening round with an even-par score of 72.
The Jayhawks will look to improve on their individual and team standings as second-round action continues Tuesday, followed by the final 18 holes of competition to take place on Wednesday.
