LAS VEGAS–Led by sophomore Dylan Windom, the University of Kansas women’s tennis team narrowly defeated the Houston Cougars, 4-3, Saturday in a dual where four of six singles matches went to three sets. The Jayhawks improved to 8-4 in the dual season while the Cougars dropped to 6-6.

Kansas won at the first and third doubles spots to claim the crucial doubles point. Windom and junior Monica Pezzotti knocked off UH’s Giorgia Pozzan and Celia Fraser at No. 1, 8-4, while sophomore Claire Dreyer and junior Victoria Khanevskaya took down the Cougars’ No. 3 duo of Liselot Koenen and Dionne Sanders, 8-6.

Windom, a Tifton, Ga., native, battled to one of KU’s three singles victories at the No. 4 position. The sophomore knocked off Charlotte Phillips in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Maria Belen Ludueña improved her singles record to 11-1 on the season with a win at the No. 3 spot in a three-match thriller against Fraser, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4). Sophomore Paulina Los also grabbed a point for the Jayhawks in No. 2 singles, winning against Bryony Hunter, 6-4, 7-6 (2).

KU will return to the courts in Las Vegas Sunday when the Jayhawks take on Idaho. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m.
