Another Near Sweep for Jayhawk Rowers

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Kansas Jayhawk rowers concluded their second competition of the spring season on Sunday during the final day of the Louisville invite. The Jayhawks won another five races on Sunday to bring their total of victories to 14 for the weekend.
The Jayhawks rowed against Eastern Michigan and Dayton during the final session. The morning started with Dayton winning the Varsity Eight with Kansas finishing second. Dayton won the race by less than four seconds.
“We are a little bit behind most teams yet as we had snow days and we have not had spring training yet,” said KU head coach Rob Catloth. “Our First Varsity Eight times were right with Alabama and Buffalo today.”
The Jayhawks responded by winning the Varsity Four, Novice Eight, and Second Varsity Eight to close the competition.
“Our depth showed again today so we are excited about that,” said Catloth. “We are developing and need to get faster.”
Kansas’ 14 victories on the weekend came in just 20 races. Senior Emily Starr has not been in a boat that has lost since April of last year.
“I think as a team, we did really well and we came out strong on the weekend,” said Starr. “We are not settling for our success this weekend we are always trying to better ourselves.”
Earlier in the day, Kansas’ Second Novice Eight fell to Virginia and Notre Dame. The Jayhawks Second Varsity Four defeated Notre Dame, Louisville, and Buffalo. The Kansas Third Varsity Eight defeated Buffalo and Louisville.
The Jayhawks will stay in Oak Ridge over Spring Break to get extra practice. Oak Ridge is the site of this year’s Conference USA Championships, which Kansas participates in for rowing. The winner of the Conference USA title earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship in Indianapolis.
