Former Jayhawk Basketball and Football Letterman Dean Wells Dies

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Dean Wells, 80, died March 17 at Central Kansas Medical Center, in Great Bend. Born March 26, 1930, at Carmen, Okla., he was the son of Rene and Thelma Jayne (Rhea) Wells.

He married Sue Reiter on Aug. 12, 1980, at Great Bend. He was a Great Bend resident since 1974, coming from Ellinwood.

He was an independent oil and gas producer.

Mr. Wells was a U.S. Navy veteran, attaining the rank of lieutenant, and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, KIOGA and StoneRidge Golf Club.

After graduating from Great Bend High School in 1948, he attended the University of Kansas. While there he earned an accounting degree and lettered in football and basketball. He was also one of the original trustees at Barton County Community College.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; five sons, Scott Wells and wife, Tammy, of Haven, Mark Wells and wife, Starla, of Hutchinson, Brett Wells and wife, Donna, of Great Bend, Blake Wells and wife, Christine, of Wichita, and Bob Reiter and wife, Linh, of Great Bend; two daughters, Jackie Quick and husband, Allen, of Lake Jackson, Texas, and Barbara Reiter of Frisco Texas; 15 grandchildren, Mikaela Wells, Luke Wells, Nathan Wells, Brock Wells and wife Tina, Blain Wells, Braydon Wells, Brandon Wells, Bryce Wells, Katie Wells, Matthew Wells, Thomas Wells, Nicole Reiter, Hunter Quick, Tanner Quick, and Hayden Reiter; and one great-grandson, Jaiden.

Funeral service will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend with the Rev. James A. Strasen officiating. Private family interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home.
