Barbee, Gutesha Lead Jayhawks During Round One at Desert Shootout

Nate Barbee and Alex Gutesha each fired first-round 68’s to lead the Kansas men’s golf team to eighth place after round one at the Desert Shootout at Palm Valley Golf Course.

Barbee, who is fresh off a second-place tie at the Squire Creek Invitational, carded his tenth under-par round of the year. Both Barbee and Gutesha are tied for fourth after day one.

Gutesha has recorded one top-10 and two top-20 finishes in his freshman campaign. Gutesha’s top-career finish came when he tied for 10th at the Fairway Club Invitational.

Freshman Chris Gilbert is tied for 50th place after shooting a 73. Gilbert is coming off an 18th-place finish at the Squire Creek Invitational.

Junior Jeff Bell opened with a 76 and is tied for 76th. Freshman Dan Waite shot an 84 and is tied for 84th.

Senior Bryan Hackenberg is competing in the event as an individual and is tied for 72nd after carding a 75.

KU shot a first round 285 to place eighth out of the 17 teams in the field. Kansas State, Iowa State and Nebraska are also competing.
