Twice the University of Kansas came within one run of San Diego State, but two big innings by the Aztecs put the game away as the Jayhawks fell 10-2 in Friday night’s softball action.

KU dropped to 12-16 overall and 1-2 during the San Diego Classic, while SDSU won its ninth-straight game to improve to 17-8.

Trailing 2-0 after two full innings, Kansas, which was playing as the home team, plated a run in the bottom of the third frame. Freshman Alex Jones led off the inning with a triple off the right field wall and scored when fellow freshman Rosie Hull doubled her in. Jones and Hull both had two hits a piece in the game as Hull extended her hit streak to eight games and bumped her weekend hit total up to a team-high eight.

The Jayhawks surrendered another run in the fourth but again answered right back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double from senior Sara Ramirez to plate Maggie Hull and make the score 3-2.

After Ramirez’s hit, the Aztecs replaced starting pitcher Bailey Micetich with Samantha Beasley, who proceeded to strikeout KU’s last seven batters.

San Diego State’s offense rallied for seven runs on seven hits over the last two innings to pull away and end the game in six innings. Senior Sara Vertelka tossed all six inning for the Jayhawks as she fell to 4-9.

Kansas concludes the San Diego Classic on Saturday (tomorrow) with a 4 p.m. (CT) contest versus UIC and a 6:30 p.m. (CT) game at San Diego. Live stats for both games will be available at www.KUAthletics.com/softball.
