Jones' Triple Lifts Kansas Past UIC

SAN DIEGO, Calif. –

Freshman Alex Jones batted in a pair of runs with a two-out triple to bring Kansas softball back from a one run deficit and help the Jayhawks improve to 13-15 overall with a 7-5 victory over UIC (6-17) Saturday afternoon.

KU wraps up play in the San Diego Classic on Saturday at approximately 6:30 p.m. CT versus San Diego.

Facing a 5-4 deficit heading into the sixth inning, Jones knocked a two-out triple off the fence in right center field to plate Maggie Hull and Sara Ramirez and give KU the advantage at 6-5. Freshman Rosie Hull brought in one last insurance run with a single down the right field line, which scored Jones.

Rosie Hull added four more hits to her weekend total as she improved her hit streak to nine games with a 4-for-4 performance. Rosie is 12-for-16 (.750) heading into the final game of the weekend.

Senior Sarah Vertelka notched the win tossing the final four and 2/3 innings. Vertelka gave up three hits and one run and struck out two to improve to 5-9 from the circle.

Freshman Mariah Montgomery batted in KU’s first two runs in the first inning and scored on Maggie Hull’s single to left field. Junior Brittany Hile batted in the Jayhawks’ fourth run in the third inning with a grounder up the middle.

KU out-hit UIC 10-8 during the game.
