Kansas 4, No. 1 Texas 3

March 21, 2009 – Lawrence, Kan.

Kansas Head Coach Ritch Price

On winning the Texas series:

“It’s a great feeling. Obviously, we’ve played a really difficult non-conference schedule in preparing for Texas and Texas A&M our first two weekends of conference play. I think it’s paid off for us.”

On the Kansas pitching staff:

“I couldn’t ask for any more. They’re (Texas) an outstanding offensive club. They battle and compete on every pitch. It seemed like they had runners on base every inning from the sixth on, but we were able to get out of it. Our bullpen has been spectacular.”

On the home field advantage:

“The big thing is that the players relish the opportunity to play the No. 1 team in the country. They have incredible respect for Texas. When they were here in 2005 we won the series, and it was the only series they lost all year. Then they went on to win a national championship. They have outstanding players and outstanding pitching, so it’s been a great weekend for us so far.”

On senior closer Paul Smyth:

“Psychologically this was crucial for him after he’s had a couple of hiccups along the way. At some point that can start to get in your head a little bit, but he’s one of the most competitive guys we have. I don’t think anyone’s happier for him than I am. It just shows how tough and competitive he is to bounce back after a couple of tough outings.”
