March 22, 2009
LAWRENCE, Kan. –
Despite singles victories at the one and three positions, the Kansas Jayhawks lost to Missouri, 5-2, at First Serve Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Jayhawks dropped to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference while Mizzou improved to 7-5 on the season and 3-1 in the Big 12. Kansas entered singles action needing four wins to pull off the dual victory after Edina Horvath and Kate Morozova earned the only doubles win for KU. Sophomore Maria Martinez dropped the first singles match of the day, but senior Julie Svistun notched the first KU singles win at the No. 3 position. Horvath followed with a win at the one spot to even the team score at 2-2. Erin Wilbert and Morozova both battled, but couldn’t hold on, surrendering the next two singles matches to give Missouri the necessary four points for the Border Showdown victory. Kuni Dorn finished last at the No. 4 position, taking her match to three sets before falling 5-7, 6-1, 6-1, to Kaitlyn Ritchie. Kansas will take to the road again after this weekend when it tours the state of Oklahoma.
