Gilbert Paces Kansas Golf In Phoenix Tournament

TUCSON, Ariz. – Chris Gilbert tied for 26th-place individually to lead Kansas men’s golf to a 10th-place finish in the two-day, 15-team National Invitational Tournament which concluded Tuesday.

The teams used two courses at Tucson National, playing the par-72 Catalina Course in rounds one and three and the par-70 Sonoran Course for the second round. As a team the Jayhawks shot 18-over par in the first round, 10-over in the second round and 19-over in the third round.

Gilbert posted the best round for the Jayhawks with a one-over par 72 on the second day. He shot 75 and 77 in the first and third rounds for a 223 total. The sophomore has finished among the top 30 in all nine tournaments this season.

Teammate Nate Barbee carded a 225 total to tie for 34th, while Jeff Bell’s 227 tied for 44th overall. Both players shot 76 on the final day. Alex Gutesha tied for 57th at 230 and Doug Quinones tied for 75th at 235. KU counted Quinones’ final-day 78 in the team scoring.

Tulsa won the event by seven strokes over SMU, while Arizona was third, nine shots back. Jonathan Khan of Arizona claimed medalist honors with a 210 total, one shot better than Tulsa’s Stephen Carney, who closed with a three-under par 69.

The Jayhawks will return to competition quickly, playing at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas Friday and Saturday.
