SAN ANTONIO – After an easy flight from Topeka, the University of Kansas men’s basketball team has returned to San Antonio – a place where KU fans have fond memories from the National Championship season of 2008 – to begin preparations for the NCAA Tournament Southwest Regional.

Top-seeded Kansas faces the No. 12-seeded University of Richmond Spiders, Friday, in the NCAA Sweet 16 at 6:27 p.m. on TBS. The winner would play the winner of No. 10 Florida State and No. 11 Virginia Commonwealth for a shot at the Final Four.

The Jayhawks were greeted by an impressive contingent of crimson and blue clad fans at Allen Fieldhouse prior to leaving, at Forbes Field Airport in Topeka and also at the team hotel in San Antonio.

Meeting with a large group of the reporters, head coach Bill Self said the Jayhawks would be ready. One media member asked about the idea of making new memories in a city that has already been good to Kansas.

“There will be memories one way or the other, they just need to be good memories,” Self said. “We need to play well and improve on what we did in Tulsa last week. I thought we played fine but there’s another step we can certainly take.”

The Jayhawks will participate in a practice open to the public Thursday from 2:10-3:00 p.m. at the Alamodome, which will include media opportunities.

“I’m excited,” Self said. “And I know our players are going to be fired up.”

Kansas fans in the area should plan to attend the Friday pre-game party and pep rally at 4:30 p.m. at Sunset Station located at 1174 E. Commerce.
