The Jayhawks improve to 16-9 overall, while the Cougars fall to 3-16.

Waters hit a solo home run with two outs in the fifth to help the Jayhawks put the game away. The freshman designated hitter is the ninth different Kansas player to homer this season. Following Waters’ home run, Casey Larson and Robby Price delivered back-to-back singles and John Allman drove both runners home with a double to the right-center gap.

Allman scored on Ryne Price’s single to center as KU stretched its lead to 6-1. Price collected his team leading 33rd RBI of the season, and his 31st in the month of March.

In the top of the ninth, junior Daniel Manos loaded the bases with nobody out, but junior Paul Smyth earned his sixth save of the season.

Jayhawk starter Sam Freeman scattered six hits over six innings to move to 4-0 on the season. The 6-foot lefty allowed just one run and struck out a season high six hitters. He also recorded nine ground ball outs, the most since collecting 13 ground outs in six innings at Texas on March 16.

Offensively, Waters, Robby Price and Allman each collected a pair of hits, while Allman had four RBIs in the game.

Kansas (16-9) will host Chicago State at 1 p.m. Wednesday and then face Benedictine College at 6 p.m. also at Hoglund Ballpark. Admission for the game against Benedictine is free of charge.
