Powers, Costner Spark Jayhawks to Fourth

TUCSON, Ariz. –

Freshman Emily Powers shot a final round 69, while senior Amanda Costner carded a 70 as the University of Kansas tied for fourth at the MountainView Collegiate hosted by the University of Colorado at MountainView Golf Course.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The Jayhawks’ final round total of 286 tied for the second-best round of the tournament and vaulted KU from sixth-place (after two rounds) into a fourth-place tie with Missouri at 874 for the three-day event.

Nebraska won the event with a three-day total of 866, while Northwestern placed second at 870.

Powers paced the team, tying for seventh place with a final round total of 69. Her round was the best on Sunday and tied for the second-best in the event’s history. For the tournament, the freshman shot a 215, just six strokes behind medallist Elaine Harris of Indiana. Powers was one of just nine players who was under par for the tournament.

Costner placed 14th in the event after a third-round total of 70. The senior, who also tied for 14th at last year’s tournament, finished with a three-day total of 218 (75-73-70). Freshman Camilla Svensson tied for 32nd place, carding a 222 (77-73-72), while Meghan Gockel (76-73-75–224) and Annie Giangrosso (72-77-77–226) rounded out KU’s finishers.

The Jayhawks will be in action again on April 8-9 at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla.
