The Jayhawks improved to 17-9 overall, while the Cougars fell to 3-17.

Kansas scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to break the game open. The Jayhawks took advantage of several Chicago State miscues in the inning. Land drove in the first run of the inning, doubling to left center and scoring Ryne Price, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

Then, after a Matt Berner RBI single, the Jayhawks were issued three straight walks. Allman singled and Buck Afenir walked to drive in two more runs as KU built an 11-0 lead after five.

The seven-run inning marks the ninth time this season the Jayhawks have scored five runs or more in an inning. KU is undefeated in all of those games.

The Jayhawks’ pitching staff also held the Cougars scoreless on the afternoon. Sophomore Shaeffer Hall pitched the first five innings, allowing just hits and two walks to go along with five strikeouts for his second victory of the season.

Senior Matt Lane pitched scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh, while sophomores Thomas Marcin and Max Ellenbecker completed the team’s second shut out of the year.

KU will play host to Benedictine College at 6 p.m. this evening before hosting No. 20 Texas A&M in a three-game Big 12 series starting Friday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark. First pitch for the Friday game with the Aggies has been moved up to 4 p.m.
