JOHN’S ISLAND, S.C. – Kansas junior Thanuttra “Fhong” Boonraksasat finished tied for fourth with a 6-over 222 as the KU women’s golf team placed eighth at the Briar’s Creek Invitational Tuesday.

Windy and cold conditions cut Monday’s scheduled two rounds short and Kansas entered Tuesday tied for eighth in the 18-team field. The Jayhawks completed their second round with a 315 (+27) and then rebounded to shoot its tourney low 301 (+13) finishing with a three-round 925 (+61). KU was one stroke ahead of Augusta State (926) and three strokes behind seventh-place Central Florida’s 922.

“We had a very good day considering the weather issues,” Kansas head coach Erin O’Neil said. “It was cold and windy yesterday and the team rebounded great today; staying focused on what we have been working on this spring. Hopefully this will carry on the rest of the season.”

Notre Dame won the event by carding 1-over 289 as a team in Tuesday’s final round. The Irish’s three-round 906 (+42) was eight strokes ahead of runner-up Maryland’s 914 (+50).

Boonraksasat was one of three Jayhawks to finish in the top-25 of the 98-golfer field. Finishing up six holes from suspended play on Monday, Boonraksasat carded seven birdies in her 24 holes on Tuesday and made a par on her final hole to finish tied for fourth individually with a 73 (+1) in her final round. Boonraksasat also shot a 73 in her opening round on Monday. KU junior Meghan Potee tied for 13th with a three-round 228 (+12) and included three birdies to end her third round with a 1-under 71. Jayhawk freshman Yupaporn “Mook” Kawinpakorn tied for 25th with a three-round 232 (+16).

“To have three players finish in the top 25 is encouraging in this field which had six ranked teams,” O’Neil said. “All three finished strong, especially Fhong and Meghan, and we were able to finish ahead of two ranked teams.”

Notre Dame’s Ashley Armstrong took medalist honors with a three-round 217 (+1), which was three shots ahead of Coastal Carolina’s Brittany Henderson 220 (+4).

KU sophomore Minami Levonowich tied for 75th with a three-round 243 (+27), while sophomore Gabby DiMarco placed 96th with a 262 (+46).

Kansas will have one more tune up before the 2013 Big 12 Championship when it goes to the Indiana Invitational April 13-14 in Bloomington, Ind. The Jayhawks will then compete at the Big 12 event in Rhodes, Iowa, April 19-21.
