Kansas Softball Falls To No. 8 Texas 10-2

AUSTIN, Texas – After scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, the Kansas softball team couldn’t plate another Jayhawk as KU fell to No. 8 Texas 10-2 Sunday afternoon.

Kansas dropped to 26-7 on the season and suffered its fourth-straight Big 12 loss to open league play winless. Texas improved to 28-3 and 2-0.

Alex Jones led off the game for Kansas with a single and was sacrificed to second before Mariah Montgomery was walked and Liz Kocon was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.

Maggie Hull then doubled to left field, plating both Jones and Montgomery before Texas got out of the inning.

Texas responded with one run in its half of the opening inning and then exploded with five runs in the second inning. The Longhorns scored runs in all five innings of the run-rule decision.

KU managed just two more hits after the first inning as Montgomery and Ashley Newman reached base via hits later in the game.

Allie Clark lasted just 1.2 innings pitching for the Jayhawks, as she allowed seven runs on six hits, while walking five. Ashley Spencer came in and gave up three runs on four hits and three walks in three innings.

Blaire Luna picked up her 17th win against just two losses for Texas. She pitched all five innings for the Longhorns, allowing four hits and striking out six.

Kansas will play a double-header at UMKC on Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m. before hosting Nebraska in a weekend Big 12 series Saturday and Sunday. First pitch Saturday is scheduled for 2 p.m. and Sunday’s game will start at 1 p.m.
