Rowing to Battle Drake and Tulsa at Home on Saturday--Schedule Posted

March 28, 2007

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

KU will return to the Kansas River for the second of three spring home regattas this weekend. Kansas will host the Tulsa Golden Hurricane and the Drake Bulldogs for a competition scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday March 31.

The Jayhawks opened their spring season last weekend at home against the Texas Longhorns and the SMU Mustangs. KU impressed with victories over SMU and close defeats to traditional Big 12 power, Texas. Despite a winter that delayed training on the Kansas River, the First Varsity Eight boat finished a mere 10 seconds behind the warm-weather residing Longhorn boat.

Tulsa is coming off an impressive victory over Creighton last weekend in Catoosa, Okla. The Golden Hurricane took seven of eight races from the Bluejays. Equally impressive was Drake, who defeated Purdue and Marietta in three of five races this past Saturday. Kansas hosted Drake and Tulsa last year for a triangular regatta.

Last year, KU raced past their opponents in four of six races, losing only in the Varsity and Novice Four contests. In the First Varsity Eight, the sports marquee race, KU defeated Drake by nearly 15 seconds and Tulsa by 28 seconds.

Boating assignments will be posted later in the week.
