Kansas softball wrapped up its first Big 12 Conference series of the season with a 10-1 loss at No. 19/17 Texas A&M Sunday afternoon at the Aggie Softball Complex.

The Jayhawks fell 12-4 in Saturday’s league-opener and are now 14-17 overall this season. The Aggies improved to 29-7.

For the second day in a row, TAMU hit a game-ending grand slam to finish the contest after six innings. KU trailed 6-1 through five and a half innings when a bases loaded home run by TAMU’s Rhiannon Kliesing earned the Aggies a run-rule.

Kansas freshman Alex Jones beat out a grounder to the shortstop in the top of the sixth inning to stop an Aggie no-hitter and later scored the Jayhawks’ lone run. Fellow freshman Rosie Hull stepped up to the plate next and hit a two-hit single to the grass between second base and center field advancing Jones to third. During senior Amanda Jobe’s at-bat, Jones scored after a pitch got by the Texas A&M catcher.

Junior Brittany Hile was the only other Jayhawk to reach base, earning a base on balls in the second frame.

Freshman Kendall Patterson served as the Jayhawks’ designated player during the contest to earn her first career start.

The Aggies scored their 10 runs on 10 hits off Jones and senior Sara Vertelka, who both saw time from the pitching circle. KU also struggled to find the strike zone delivering seven walks.

Kansas will host UMKC for a mid-week doubleheader on Tuesday, March 30 starting at 4 p.m. The Jayhawks then return to conference action April 2-3 when they welcome Texas for a two-game series at Arrocha Ballpark.
