NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma junior pitcher Jonathan Gray tossed a complete game, allowing one run on two hits with 12 strikeouts as the 11th-ranked Sooners downed Kansas, 12-1, Thursday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

OU claimed the opener in the three-game Big 12 series and improved to 24-4 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The Jayhawks fell to 14-9 overall and 2-2 in league play.

The Sooners used a dominating pitching performance by Gray and a big three-run homer by Matt Oberste in the bottom of the first for their 12th-straight victory and 19th home win of the season.

Gray did not allow a Jayhawk baserunner until the top of the seventh, when sophomore Dakota Smith led off the inning with a line drive double to the gap in right-center. Smith scored KU’s only run of the night after Kevin Kuntz moved him to third on an infield hit and Jordan Dreiling grounded into a double play.

After giving up the first inning homer to Oberste, Kansas starting pitcher Frank Duncan settled down and pitched five strong innings, before running into trouble in the seventh. The junior righty struck out a season-high eight hitters and allowed eight hits and seven earned runs over 6 2/3 innings.

Leading 4-1 after 6 ½ innings, the Sooners scored four runs in the seventh and four in the eighth to turn a tight game into a blow-out. Craig Aikin, Oberste and Kolbey Carpenter each had three RBIs for Oklahoma.

The Jayhawks will look to bounce back in game two of the series against Oklahoma Friday at 6:30 p.m. The game will be televised on Fox College Sports Central (Channel 145 on Knology Cable).
