Seniors Walt Koelbel and Andrew Storm helped lead the Kansas Men’s Golf team to a 16th place finish with 307 strokes as a team after day one at the Western Intercollegiate.

“We obviously struggled today and it is tough to compete when you have three guys shoot in the 80’s,” said head coach Kit Grove. “Walt and Andrew did some nice things today and hopefully we can execute better tomorrow.”

Koelbel was the Jayhawks’ top-finisher after day one with a round of 73. Koelbel, who fired a pair of birdies on day one, is tied for 24th place. Storm shot a pair of 37’s on the front and back nine to card a 74 and is tied for 31st place.

The rest of the squad struggled around Pasatiempo Golf Course on day one. Junior Bryan Hackenberg and freshman Ian Anson shot opening day 80’s to tie for 77th place. Freshman Blake Giroux shot an 82 to tie for 84th place.

Fresno State jumped out to the early lead at the event with a first round 278. Bhavik Patel of Fresno State and Pat Grady of Colorado carded the low rounds of the day with rounds of 68.

The second round of play will be conducted on March 30 and live scoring can be tracked at golfstat.com. Check back to kuatlhetics.com for complete coverage of the Western Intercollegiate.
