March 30, 2013

STILLWATER, Okla. – After earning the doubles point to start the match, 74th-ranked Kansas fell to No. 50 Kansas State, 4-3, Saturday at Jayhawk Tennis Center.

With the match score tied at 3-3, all players and spectators turned their attention toward the No. 5 singles match. Ana Gomez ended up defeating KU freshman Nastya Trubica in that match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, as players and spectators from both sides cheered and chanted throughout the third set.

Kansas took a 1-0 lead with victories in the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches to start the day. Junior Paulina Los and sophomore Maria Belen Ludueña defeated K-State’s Gomez and Carmen Borau, while Trubica and senior Victoria Khanevskaya beat Ivana Kubickova and Gema Bolado—both scores were 8-4.

K-State came back firing to open singles play, earning straight-sets wins in all of the top three singles matches.

The Jayhawks fought back, however, with Khanevskaya defeating Bolado, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 6 singles match. A three-set victory by Windom over Borau, 6-0, 2-6, 7-5, set up the finale in the No. 5 match.

With the loss, Kansas fell to 8-5 in dual play this season, including an 0-3 mark in Big 12 play. The Wildcats are now 7-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
