Kansas Successful at Home Against Tulsa and Drake

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas rowing team was successful at its first home regatta of the 2006 spring season, against Tulsa and Drake, winning four of six races Saturday afternoon on the Kansas River.
“I am really pleased with how they raced today,” head coach Rob Catloth said. “They competed very well and were aggressive in each event they raced in.”
The Jayhawks split wins in the Varsity races. Tulsa took first in the Second Varsity Four with a time of 7:44.8, while Kansas only 4.9 seconds behind came in second with a time of 7:49.7. In the First Varsity Four race, Tulsa was again on top with a time of 7:34.2, while Drake finished second at 7:40.7 and Kansas in third with a time of 7:57.4.
Leading the Second Varsity Eight boat senior coxswain Ardis Johnson turned things around for the Jayhawks notching a 7:58.15 first place time. Tulsa finished second at 7:18.6 and Drake in third at 7:24.9.
The First Varsity Eight race meant another win for the Jayhawks. Junior coxswain Samira Naji and senior captain Jennifer Ebel contributed to the first place time of 6:46.0. Tulsa and Drake again finished close with times of 7:00.9 and 7:14.0, respectively.
Kansas was victorious in both Novice Races of the day. The First Novice Eight which saw Kansas Boat A take first with a time of 7:10.9 was led by freshman coxswain Katie Brosious. Not far behind was Drake with a second-place finish of 7:17.3 and Kansas Boat B with a time of 7:48.0 in third.
In the First Novice Four, Kansas Boat A finished first with a time of 7:58.15 and Kansas Boat B took second with a time of 8:21.25. Taking third was Tulsa with a time of 8:27.45.
Kansas next sees action when it hosts Kansas State in the Kansas Cup on Saturday, April 8.
