Jayhawks to Compete at Cowboy Classic

April 1, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas’ men’s golf team will look to get their spring season on the right track when they compete at the Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz. on April 4-5. The tournament will be hosted by the University of Wyoming. This is the fifth tournament of the spring season for the Jayhawks. The team took 12th place in its first two tournaments, 10th place in its third tournament, and 11th place at the Border Olympics, its most recent tournament.

Head coach Kit Grove is aware that the team is not playing its best and points to the overall inconsistency as a contributing factor.

“We’ve gotten off to a little bit of a slow start, that’s no secret,” Grove said. “We just can’t seem to put four good scores together in the same round. Our execution has been a little weak at times too. If we want to be competitive, we can’t just rely on one or two good scores, we need everybody to give us solid rounds.”

Looking to turn things around for Kansas are sophomores Alex Gutesha and Dan Waite, seniors Nate Barbee and Jeff Bell, and junior Doug Quinones.

Gutesha recorded his best 54 hole score of the spring season at the Border Olympics with a score of 220. He is currently second on the team in scoring average with a 74.08.

Waite, who replaces Chris Gilbert in the lineup, is competing in his second tournament of the spring season. Waite competed at the Louisiana Classics where he shot a score of 238. Currently, his scoring average is 78.00.

Barbee has remained fairly consistent throughout the spring season. Of the 12 rounds he has played, all but two of his scores have been in the 72-77 range. Barbee is currently third on the team in scoring average with a 74.28.

Bell matched his best score of the spring season at the Border Olympics with a 226. He also posted a 226 at the Louisiana Classics. He has a scoring average of 75.28, putting him in fifth place on the team.

Quinones managed to shoot his best round of the spring season at the Border Olympics with a score of 218. He also finished in a tie for 38th, also his best result of the spring season. His scoring average currently sits at 75.5.
