April 2, 2010
LAWRENCE, Kan. –
The Kansas softball team hosted No. 17/17 Texas at Arrocha Ballpark in its Big 12 Conference home opener Friday afternoon where the Jayhawks fell 7-0 to the Longhorns.
KU, which played its second consecutive top 25 conference foe, dropped to 16-18 overall and 0-3 in the Big 12, while UT won its sixth-straight game to improve to 30-8 overall and 3-0 in the league.
Despite Kansas’ struggles on offense, the Jayhawks made some impressive defensive plays. Freshman shortstop, Mariah Montgomery, made a diving catch in the first inning against Texas’ Loryn Johnson’s popup fly ball. Senior first baseman, Amanda Jobe, responded on defense in the seventh inning making a line drive catch and then diving to touch first base to putout the runner and record a double-play.
Texas ended the game with seven runs off 13 hits while Kansas managed three off Texas pitcher Blaire Luna. Luna has now gone 22 and 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.
Jayhawks Rosie Hull, Montgomery and Jobe recorded hits despite the loss.
Texas scored its first run in the first inning and then picked up the pace with threes run in the third inning and three runs in the seventh.
Kansas will host Texas again on Saturday April 3 at noon where it will try and claim a victory.
