Kansas Shows Improvement Against No. 16 Texas

KANSAS CITY, Kan. –
Kansas rowing improved its times in all events from the Oklahoma Invitational and was able to score a victory in the Second Novice Eight against No. 16 Texas Saturday morning in the Jayhawks for the Cure Pink Event regatta.
“We had better performances across the board,” said Kansas head rowing coach Rob Catloth. “We knew Texas was going to be tough. They came into this week ranked 16th as a team. They beat No. 10 Wisconsin two weeks ago, so we knew they were going to be really tough. We were trying to make a lot of improvements as a team from our Oklahoma races. We feel like we did a pretty good job of that.”
The regatta began with KU’s Second Novice Eight defeating Texas by more than four seconds with a time of 7:05.5. Katie Mathis was the coxswain for the boat, while Allie McLane, Jessica Miller, Leah Marten, Emily Starr, Meg DeMuri, Hannah Singhal, Cara Murray and Bailey Stallbaumer comprised the eight rowers.
“That was a really good race,” said Catloth. “We’re still trying to figure out novice (teams). We feel like we have a really good group of freshmen with a lot of good athletes. I think it’s a good sign of where we’re going with the program.”
The event also marked the Jayhawks for a Cure Pink Event, as both teams wore pink uniforms in an effort to promote breast cancer awareness. Fans in attendance were also able to receive Jayhawks for a Cure pink ribbon magnets for making a donation toward breast cancer research. Fans donated a total of $482 at the event. The proceeds will benefit the LawrenceMemorialHospitalBreastCenter and the KU Med Cancer Center.
“Kansas is doing a really good thing with breast cancer awareness. Both of us (Kansas and Texas) joined in on this, and we’re real excited to support this.”
Kansas will compete next in the Knecht Cup April 9-10 in Camden, N.J. KU will then host two events at Wyandotte County Lake to close out the month of April, beginning with the Kansas Cup against Kansas State April 23 and finishing with the Big 12 Rowing Championship April 30.
