Brown, Cooper Regionally Qualify at Day Two of <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas Senior Ashley Brown and sophomore Kirk Cooper regionally qualified in the preliminaries of the women’s 400-meter hurdles and men’s pole vault, respectively, during day two of the 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Thursday.

Brown, the first Jayhawk to compete at the meet, cruised into the finals of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.09. It was the fourth-best time in the event’s preliminary races. The Overton, Neb., native competes in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles, an event in which she has already regionally qualified, at 10:20 a.m. on Friday with the finals of each event scheduled for Saturday.

Cooper cleared the qualifying height of 5.05 meters (16 feet, 6 ¾ inches) on his first attempt. In his three attempts at 5.20 meters, the Centennial, Colo., native was unable to surpass what would have been a career-best mark.

Senior Julius Jiles just missed on a qualifying time. His 17th-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles of 53.05 was a half of a second off the regional time.
