April 4, 2006

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas softball swept the Big 12 Conference weekly honors as junior pitcher Kassie Humphreys and senior pitcher/designated player Serena Settlemier were named Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Tuesday. It marks the first time in Big 12 history that KU has won both the player and pitcher awards in the same week.

Settlemier earns the third league weekly accolade of her career (Feb. 19, 2002 and March 23, 2004) while Humphreys claims her second (May 4, 2004) overall.

Humphreys posted 14 strikeouts, allowed just one hit and posted a .000 ERA in 10 innings last week. She held the opposing hitters to a .033 batting average and surrendered one unearned run in two appearances.
UMKC was hitless against Humphreys, while she compiled two strikeouts through two innings to earn the win. Against Oklahoma State, she struck out 12, walked four and gave up only one hit in eight innings in game one of the doubleheader. On the season Humphreys leads KU with 121 strikeouts through 109.1 innings.

Settlemier hit .636 in four games last week to lead the Jayhawks to a 3-1 record, including a 1-1 mark in conference action. The Kelso, Wash. native went 7-for-11 while tallying four home runs and two doubles. She also contributed seven runs and 13 RBI. In the UMKC doubleheader, Settlemier was 5-for-7 with three home runs and eight RBI in two victories.

In two at-bats against Oklahoma State in game two of the doubleheader, Settlemier recorded five RBI, a double and a grand slam. It accounted for her fourth grand slam of the season to bring Settlemier’s season total to a school-record 16 and career mark to a program-best 38. In the circle, Settlemier (11-4) struck out five, walked two, and allowed one hit through the first three innings. Settlemier also compiled two wins and maintained a .000 ERA in 10 innings.

KU hosts Nebraska Tuesday in a Big 12 match-up at Arrocha. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. The Jayhawks will then travel to Arkansas for a non-conference doubleheader with the Lady Razorbacks Wednesday.
