Postgame Quotes

Kansas 6, No. 7 Baylor 0

Lawrence, Kan. – April 4, 2009

Kansas head coach Ritch Price

On the team’s response after losing the opening game of the series:

“I thought we really showed some toughness and resiliency today. After a devastating loss last night, I challenged those guys to walk back in the yard and show that they are tough enough today to compete against a guy (Baylor’s Logan Verrett) who is 7-0. It’s one of the best wins we have had all year.”

On the importance of the win:

“I think it was absolutely crucial if you are trying to do something special and make the NCAA Tournament. After what happened last night, an average team walks into the yard today and gets beat up again. I thought we showed some toughness and showed some competitiveness. That’s what it takes to play in this league, because every day is a grind.”

On T.J. Walz performance on the mound:

“I was really pleased with him. He was pounding the strike zone from the first hitter who stepped in the box today. He’s throwing 91-92 and has a really good breaking ball. I thought he threw some good changeups to their left-handed hitters today, which is a pitch he is trying to develop to negate the left-handed hitters approach against him. We needed a big time performance when you are facing a guy who has 42 strikeouts, only six walks and is 7-0, we needed the effort we got from him today to win.”

On Nick Faunce’s recent resurgence at the plate:

“I think you can turn your season around in the game with one at bat. The last three games he has swung the bat completely different than the last two weeks.”

On facing Baylor’s tough pitching:

“I felt good about our approach. We were on time with his fastball and for the most part we tried to hit the breaking ball when it was elevated in the strike zone. He still had six or seven strikeouts, but I was really pleased. It took a really good offensive approach against them to be successful.”
