Kansas Rowers Face New Foes on Saturday

April 4, 2013

LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the first time since 2010, the Kansas rowing team will battle a team from the Big 10 on Saturday when the squad travels to Bloomington, Ind., to take on the Hoosiers. The Jayhawks will also row against Georgetown at the regatta. Kansas has never rowed against the Hoyas. The regatta will consist of six different 2,000-meter races.

Kansas is coming off a loss in one of the closest duals in the 16-year history of the Sunflower Showdown versus Kansas State. The Wildcats took the First Varsity Eight race by 1.4 seconds to win the dual.

“We have worked on things this week and now we need to apply what we have learned,” said KU head coach Rob Catloth. “The expectation is we will have more boat speed.”

The Jayhawks have only three competitions left before the Big 12 Championships in Kansas City on May 4.

“Right now we are trying to build up,” said Catloth. “We need to be at peak speed in a month. We are getting there, but the goal is to be at peak speed a month from now.”
