Jayhawks Tied for Sixth After Day One at Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic

WICHITA, Kan. –

Nate Barbee lead the Kansas men’s golf team to a tie for sixth after two rounds at the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic in windy Wichita, Kan. at Wichita Country Club.

The Jayhawks shot a 302 in round one and then improved on that by two strokes in round two.

Barbee struggled in the morning round with a 77 before responding with an even-par 71 in round two. Barbee has amassed 16 rounds of par or better on the season.

“The conditions were very difficult today as the wind was gusting up to 35 mph, but we had a few guys that were able to hold on and put some nice rounds together,” said head coach Kit Grove.

Senior Bryan Hackenberg carded rounds of 72 and 77 to enter the final round tied for 19th. Hackenberg will attempt to earn his third top-20 finish of the year in the final round.

Freshman Dan Waite battled a balky back to card rounds of 78 and 75. Waite is tied for 34th place.

Alex Gutesha is tied for 38th after shooting a first-day total of 154. Fellow freshman Chris Gilbert shot a 156 to enter round three tied for 44th.

Sophomore Blake Giroux fired rounds of 75 and 76 as an individual in round one and is tied for 27th. Giroux is competing in his first event since the Kansas Invitational in late September.

Host, Wichita State, is leading the event after two rounds with a score of 582. Tyler Gann of Wichita State leads the event after two rounds after carding rounds of 69 and 73.
