Kansas Rowing to Host Kansas Cup Saturday on Senior Day

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas rowing team hosts in-state rival Kansas State in the Kansas Cup on Saturday, April 8, beginning at 10:20 a.m. on the Kansas River at Burcham Park. The Jayhawks will honor seniors Alexis Boston, Jennifer Ebel, Tayler Eldridge, Ardis Johnson, Kris Lazar, Paige Phillips and Gillian Van Ruyven following the regatta.

Kansas will enter boats in the Novice Four, Novice Eight, Varsity Four, First Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight. Kansas State will not be competing in the Novice Four. The winner of the Kansas Cup is determined by the team that has the most points based on wins: First Varsity Eight – 8 points, Second Varsity Eight – 5 points, Novice Eight – 5 points and First Varsity Four – 3 points.

Last spring, the Wildcats broke the Jayhawks’ record of six consecutive wins at the Kansas Cup. The Jayhawks hope to reclaim the title. Kansas last competed against Kansas State in the Sunflower Showdown in Manhattan last fall, breaking Kansas State’s three-year winning streak.

This past weekend, Kansas won four of six races at its first home regatta against Tulsa and Drake. The Jayhawks split victories in the four varsity races. KU won the Second Varsity Eight in 7:58.15 and the First Varsity Eight in 6:46.0. It also won both novice races, the First Novice Eight in 7:10.9 and the First Novice Four in 7:58.15.

Directions to Burcham Park:
From the Kansas Turnpike (I – 70), take the West Lawrence exit #202. Go through the first stop light and turn left at 4th Street. Take 4th Street to the third stop sign and turn left on Indiana Street. Follow Indiana Street two blocks then turn right into Burcham Park at 2nd and Indiana.
