Barbee, Hackenberg Lead Kansas to Fourth-Place Finish at Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic

Nate Barbee and Bryan Hackenberg both earned top-10 finishes to lead the Kansas men’s golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic at Wichita Country Club.

KU shot a final round 292, which marks their best round of the tournament, and moved up the leaderboard two spots. The Jayhawks’ 292 marked the best team score of the day.

“Any time you can get the low round of the day it means you played well and I was proud of how the kids finished strong,” said head coach Kit Grove.

Barbee fired a 72 to tie for fifth place. Barbee has now recoded eight top-10 finishes during his spectacular junior campaign.

Hackenberg shot a 74 in round three to tie for 10th place. Hackenberg has turned in three top-10 finishes in his senior season.

Freshman Dan Waite shot his best round of the event with a final day 72 and moved up 19 spots on the leaderboard to tie for 15th place. The finish marks the best finish in Waite’s freshman season.

Freshman Alex Gutesha shot a 74 to tie for 26th place. Fellow freshman Chris Gilbert shot 76 to finish in a tie for 42nd.

Sophomore Blake Giroux carded a 74 to tie for 15th place. The finish gives Giroux his first top-20 finish of the season.

Wichita State, the host school, won the event by 12 strokes over UT-Arlington. Dustin Garza of Wichita State shot a 68 in the final round to earn medalist honors.

The Jayhawks will wrap up the regular season when they travel to Columbia, Mo. April 12-13 to compete in the Missouri Intercollegiate. Check back to kuathletics.com for complete coverage of the 2009-10 season.
