Jayhawks Set to Host Missouri and Baylor

April 7, 2006

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The University of Kansas tennis team will continue its critical stretch of conference matches when it hosts Missouri and Baylor this weekend in Lawrence.

The Jayhawks will face their Border Showdown rivals on Saturday at noon, and then take on BU, the nation’s eighth ranked team, on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Sunday’s date with the Bears will mark the final home appearance for senior Christine Skoda. The Edmonton, Alberta native has been a constant in KU’s lineup over her career, and currently boasts an 11-7 singles record this spring while occupying the No. 3 slot.

Kansas is coming off just its seventh loss off the season, a 4-3 setback to Nebraska which snapped KU’s six match winning streak. Sophomore Elizaveta Avdeeva notched a singles win for the Jayhawks (11-7, 2-4), extending her mark of consecutive victories to ten. KU also got singles wins from freshman Edina Horvath — her seventh straight — and from Skoda.

Baylor currently stands alone atop the Big 12 standings with a 17-3 mark, including a perfect 6-0 in league play. The Bears have been on a tear lately, winning six straight.

Missouri enters Saturday’s contest with a 6-7 overall record and an 0-6 mark in the Big 12. The Tigers’ date with KU is their second of four straight road duals.

Both matches are currently scheduled to be played outside at Robinson Courts, however, if the weather should become a problem, they would be moved to First Serve. Results will be made available at www.kuathletics.com shortly after play is completed.
