Kansas Continues to Amass Victories at Texas Relays

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>Seniors Abby Emsick and Barrett Saunders won the women’s discus and men’s long jump, respectively, at the Texas Relays in Austin Texas. The 80th Texas Relays continue Saturday with KU juniors Crystal Manning and Kate Sultanova scheduled to compete.

Saunders leapt to a new personal best 25-10 (7.87m) to win the section B men’s long jump. The mark represented an improvement of over 16 inches from Saunders’ previous best and would have represented the best men’s long jump performance in the nation entering the weekend.

Emsick, the school record holder in the discus, took the title in the event, throwing for a season-best 175-05 feet (53.46m). Entering the weekend, the throw would have represented the ninth best throw in the nation and the fourth-best throw in the Big 12 Conference.

Junior Hugh Murphy continued placed fifth in the section B men’s javelin throw. The <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Brown University transfer and Baldwin City, Kan., native finished with a toss of 208-10 (63.66m). Entering the weekend, Murphy owned the second best throw in the conference.

Sophomore Stephanie Horton will also compete Saturday in the women’s section A shot put while juniors Ashley Brown and Julius Jiles will participate in the finals of the women’s 100-meter hurdles and men’s 110-meter hurdles, respectively.
